2000 Ford Windstar 3.8L (bearing shot.. somewhere among 7 pulleys)?

How much play might a power steering pump pulley have?

I changed the belt and idler pulley(no change). The sound I hearing can get too loud at times to isolate the bad bearing. Serpentine drives: Crank, water pump, alternator, power steering, idler, and tensioning idler. Any ideas?2000 Ford Windstar 3.8L (bearing shot.. somewhere among 7 pulleys)?
i would get a can of wd40 and spray each one and listen for the noise to stop2000 Ford Windstar 3.8L (bearing shot.. somewhere among 7 pulleys)?
take the belt off and check each pulley for play and spin the p/s a/c idler and tensioner. you should be able to tell which one is the problem. most likeky the idler or tensioner2000 Ford Windstar 3.8L (bearing shot.. somewhere among 7 pulleys)?
I have seen the cam synchronizer go bad and thought it was a pulley problem. it sounded like the noise was right there at the belt. this was also a 2000 windstar w/3.8. good luck.

JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?

I just got almost for free Jeep 1988 4.2 . Did not run . I started changed fluids , oil etc , and engine is knocking like woodpicker .

To me soung like broken lifter ( my friends have same opinion ).

I know I shoud change camshaft and lifters . My question is -

-do I need remove engine head to do this job?

-maybe better idea is to buy another engine from junk-yard instal , use for while and in same time rebiuld this knocking ? -Any idea how much cost used complite engine -some links?

-how about remanufactired engines -avaliable on line for about $1400 ? -Are they OK -is it good price ?

I never had Jeep before , I like this vehicycle a lot , I would brigh this vehicycle to life again .

I know how to do most job , I just need good advices .

I will be happy if someone will give me some links about problem above , some advices .

How much will cost me to buy all parts needed to rebiuld engine by myself ?

Another problem with Jeep. I have automatic transmition -is OK-but when I stop on red light many times engine dies . Normal RPM is about 600 as should be . I did not do tune-up yet . Maybe is needed .

What is your opinion about this problem ?

Maybe I need change fuel pump ? Or maybe is some adjustment on this pump ?

And last question , power stering . When engine is warm , power steering does not work as good as when is cold . Is there some adjastment on power steering pump ?

Any help is needed . Thank you .JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
Sounds to me like you might have a cracked flex-plate which can simulate the exact same noise as a lower engine knock. This could also be causing you transmission problem i would remove the inspection cover on the transmission bell housing spiflex-platexplate around and check for any cracks. On the power steering issue sounds like the fluid is reaching its boiling point after it warms up which it could be contaminated with water or something since it hasent been running. I would recommend draining the fluid and refilling it and also add some lucas power steering fluid and see what happens.JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
Hi

For your power steering, any adjustment would be on the steering box

And I think your rpm`s should be up to about 850. For the knock, put in two qt/liter of transition fluid in the oil. (Take out about 2 qt) It is

mostly detergent and may clean the lifters. Its worth a try ! And leave

it in for a few days.

1987 Toyota Celica GT?

I'm looking for my first car, and I found a 1987 Toyota Celica GT 5 speed for $700 OBO.

The body is in pretty good shape, but the owner says it needs a tune up, oil change, and possibly a power steering pump.

It also has no radio.

The price of the car is not on KBB or Edmunds since it is older that 1990, how much would be a good offer to make on this car and how much do you expect the repairs to cost?1987 Toyota Celica GT?
Buy a newer car between 1998 and 2004. I Woudnt buy something from the 80's. Also, because of all the repairs it needs.

Do you know the buyer? He could just be selling it to you to get it off his hands and it dosent work and is mice infested.1987 Toyota Celica GT?
you should offer about 300 dollars because you are looking at at least 600 dollars in repairs.

its not a good deal.1987 Toyota Celica GT?
650$ and the repairs will cost about 120$1987 Toyota Celica GT?
Make certain the headlight doors open. Make sure it drives straight, doesn't overheat, and that there's no clicking sound when turning.

The 3S-FE is a pretty dayum reliable engine. If it's not belching smoke and all the above stuff works, $700 is an okay price. I'd offer $500 but have the extra 2 $100 bills in my pocket in case he refuses.

How to reinstall the serpantine belt on a 1998 chevy s10 blazer 6cyl 4.3L 4x4?

I ran into that same problem on a p-chassis 4.3L it was like I was in the twilight zone or stuff. It didn't have a belt routing sticker in the engine bay but I think yours should, mabey look for it on the fan shroud thats laying on the ground.

How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?

My local Subaru dealer, upon doing my oil change (I'm at 72,000 miles) recommends 1,500 worth of repair including replacing the brake pads (I believe it), the power steering pump and the starter. I want a second opinion. I'm in Seattle/Lynnwood. Money is tight but I do want to be safe. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?
If money is tight, this is what I would recommend. Front brake pad are fairly easy to replace. If your not comfortable doing something like this, maybe a friend or relative could help. New pads only cost around $40 and its a 30 min job. Or take it to a local garage that has a good reputation. The dealer is usually the most expensive. What did they say about the power steering pump, is it just leaking a little? Try some stop leak first if that's the case. In most cases the pump will make a lot of noise before it goes out. Have an independent garage check it out first.

The starter will not be a safety issue. If it goes out you won't be able to start you car. Also a good independent garage could put in a rebuilt starter and save you some money. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?
Well, here, lets put it in a really easy to understand situation.

You like stopping your vehicle. It keeps you safe and alive.

Currently, your stopping ability, the ability that stops you from dying, or killing others, is down to only 15%.

Now, given that, do you really want to just put off the repairs? Is it urgent? I would think, for any logical person, that there's no question about it. Go get it fixed.

Power steering? Same thing. If you enjoy the ability to turn your car with any sort of reliability, get it fixed. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?

  • 1977 Ford F150 starting problems.. And other Misc. questions?

We have had this truck for a little over 2 years. Not driven it much... But have changed out the fuel tank for a brand new one, replaced the radiator with a better one (not new, but used) and have now just changed the power steering pump yesterday.

My husband isn't really mechanically inclined when it comes to his truck yet.. but he's willing to learn! We got a chiltons manual (if thats how its spelled...) but he has lost it this last year.

We have been having 1 new problem with the truck that we've never had before.. It has ALWAYS started up on a dime. Easily.. no problems.

My husband recently drove it home about 80 miles the other day with it overheating every 20 minutes or so... (powersteering pump was out, so the belt wasn't attached to the fan to cool the engine/radiator) It got home fine..

Now when he went and installed the powersteering pump, it wouldn't start. It turned and turned, but wouldn't fire. The spark plugs were changed out 2 years ago..

We got it going by bypassing the solenoid... (he also tried charging the battery at the same time by jumping it with our van, so now I'm confused as to what made it start...)

We hot wired it, basically and got it started.

Let it run for about 20 minutes, and it was just fine! Drove it around the block no problem.

BUT- after her turned it off, I told him to try to start it up with the key again.... and it started right up without the bypassing of the solenoid...WTF?

Do you think the solenoid is going out..?? I told him he shouldnt have tried jumping the truck battery AND bypass the solenoid starting at the same time... because now we don't know if it was the battery, or the solenoid.

ANY OPINIONS!??? We don't have any additional money to bring the thing into the shop right now, and would like to do any fixing on our own.

OH YEAH.. and the wiring is crapily done. It could be something with that as well.. Im really not sure where HALF of the wires go in this thing. It's so badly done..1977 Ford F150 starting problems.. And other Misc. questions?
My assumption from afar is the battery was low.

If the truck starts easily, measure the voltage across the battery when you crank it and when it starts. The cranking volts should be higher than 9 volts and the running volts should be higher than 13.5 volts.

If it isn't starting very well or at all with the key, but does bypassing the solenoid, the small wire on the solenoid should have battery voltage when the key is in the start position. If it does, solenoid is probably bad.1977 Ford F150 starting problems.. And other Misc. questions?
Connected to your starter solinoid, on the passenger side inner fender is a small black wire, that has a lumo on it (fusable link) This wire under the lump can be and probably is corroded. change this wire, will probably fix the problem.1977 Ford F150 starting problems.. And other Misc. questions?
you need to throw the chiltons manual in the garbage, get either a motors or haynes.

    then replace the battery.

for the wiring, go to alldata.com1977 Ford F150 starting problems.. And other Misc. questions?
this is easy clean your battery cables and your solenoid connections that should do it but just make sure you put everything back on the way it came dirty connections cause alot of resistance so cleaning them should do it

    2 Automotive Questions?

I have 2 Questions- Number one is what would be a likely cause of a slow oil leak? about once every week and a half or 2 weeks i have to put a quart in, or the engine starts knocking. I was thinking it could be the valve cover gasket, but i just wanted a second opinion

Number two- How difficult is it to replace a power steering pump and reservoir? The car is an 89 Grand prix. I have a fair amount of automotive ability, but i don't claim to be an expert by any means. I feel like i should be capable of changing the power steering pump, because i can't imagine that there's a whole lot too it, But i just want to make sure of what im getting into before i start ripping parts off of my car haha. So if someone can please tell me what all is involved in power steering pump replacement, i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! 2 Automotive Questions?
Question 1. depending on which engine you have it could be the valve cover/covers gaskets or the intake on the 3.1 engine which is very common.

Question 2. Same as before it depends on the engine size but both are not that hard to change out but you will need a power steering pump pulley remover, the installer comes with the rebuilt pump.

    Automotive help please?

the power steering pump looks easy...says it a lil easyer from the bottom in some cases...but heres a step by step...good luck

I just found out my 95 LHS Chrysler, the body is rusted to H E double hockey sticks, what to do?

I took my LHS 95 to change the broken trailing arm and power steering pump only to see on the lift the body is rusted more than I thought. The guy told me the bolts, if they break, the frame would be destroyed.

Out of curiousity, how much would that cost to replace?? Should I just cut my loss and start saving for a different car?I just found out my 95 LHS Chrysler, the body is rusted to H E double hockey sticks, what to do?
Start saving for a new car. I bought a few cars from MN. because they where cheaper then found out why. Plan on changing the car. Sorry.I just found out my 95 LHS Chrysler, the body is rusted to H E double hockey sticks, what to do?
Yeppie, it is 15 years old. Way past its prime.Hopefully it will last long enough for you to get some down payment money saved up.

Rust is difficult to repair so it is not worth attempting .I just found out my 95 LHS Chrysler, the body is rusted to H E double hockey sticks, what to do?
Do the minimum repairs, save for another car, get in checked out before you buy it.

Ok car question. When I accelerate the car is pulling against me?

and it kind of rocks back and forth. It takes a bit of time to get to a higher speed and yesterday I was almost hit due to it.

My husband says something is in the gas tank but it was doing this well before the last tank of gas only now it is a lot worse!

I also, despite my husbands thoughts, know the slave cylinder is going out and the power steering pump needs to be replaced.

How hard is this to do. I'm not alloweed a new car and I'm quite ticked off because we do not have the money to put this piece of **** kia in the shop.

So can anyone tell me what can cause the car to pull against me and have issues with acceleration?

And how hard it is to change the power steering pump and the slave cylinder?

Yes he bought me this piece of **** when my mazada was totaled. It cost us a big 1200 and he spent some of the money on windows and inserts he inisted he could sell on line and get double our money back but not one has sold in 6 months! and to make it more fun I have 161 windows sitting on the property and we are now out the money.

Anyone care to kick him for me?

Thank you!Ok car question. When I accelerate the car is pulling against me?
I commend you for calling your Kia a POS Kia. I admire that yu are not afraid of the truth, instead of delusional about Korean cars being the best vehicles in the world and such..........

As for what is going on with the car, your Transmission may be dying. Maybe stuck in a gear?

The rocking back and forth is interesting. If you mean front-to-back back and forth, it may be bucking, and be the transmisison refusing to shift in any type of reasonable, driveable way.

Check the fluid on that. It may be so thirsty, it will drink up a whole quart.

Some transmissions do just let excess fluid run out instead of causing an overfilled condition. Overfilling a transmission is bad, but not as bad as not having enough fluid. Oddly enough, overfilling will also cause your transmission to not work right. Be cautious, add a quarter quart at a time... this way you avoid that.Ok car question. Sounds like you transmission is going out. You can have it rebuilt or try getting another. It may cost as much as the car itself. Changing a power steering pump is easy. Just can be a little messy for a rookie. Best of luck to you!Ok car question. When I accelerate the car is pulling against me?
does your power steering work at all? I would guess the other answers on here are incorrect in saying it's the transmission because they are all assuming it's automatic. you said your slave is bad so it must be a standard shift right? well anyway my thought is under hard acceleration a front wheel drive car will try and pull the wheel out of your hands it's called torque steer. thats normal but if your power steering is out that will amplify the problem because you don't have the mechanical assist from the pump any more. so if you mash the gas the wheel will want to pull out of your hand and it will be very difficult to pull it back strait.

as for how to replace it. it's not real hard but it isn't feasible for me to type it all out here so what I would suggest is go to the auto parts store and buy a $15 hanse manual for your car and that will have easy to follow step by step instructionsOk car question. When I accelerate the car is pulling against me?
Did your husband raise the life insurance policy coverage on you recently?

you say it,s hard picking up speed? maybe the cat. converter is clogging up or it needs a complete tune-up. those cars are cheap made from day 1. it very well could be the transmission getting ready to go out.

My powere steering is chirping when i try and turn at low speeds ,how do i take off the power sterring pump?

i was thinking it was the belt at first cause its frayed but i didnt think that should have caused that chirping problem,so im looking to drain it change the belt and see if that works firstMy powere steering is chirping when i try and turn at low speeds ,how do i take off the power sterring pump?
it probably is the belt. try spraying the belt with a silicone spray or a belt dressing before you go pulling off the belt or the pump; if the chirp stops its only the belt. make sure the pump reservoir is filled to the full mark.

i seriously doubt its the pump. pumps groan when they fail. if you want to drain the power steering pump, disconnect the low pressure return hose from the reservoir and put it into a suitable container such as a 2 liter soda bottle. then have someone start the engine while you hold the hose in the container. have them shut the engine off after about 10 seconds (the reservoir should be empty by then). then reconnect the hose and refill the reservoir. bleed the power steering by running the engine and turning the wheel full lock to one side and hold it there, then turn it to full lock in the opposite direction and hold it there. do this about 3 times then correct the level in the reservoir.

as I said, I agree with you that its probably the belt and not the pump

    hope that helps

My truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?

It just started, i heard its the power steering pump. Anyone know how to change that?...and if it will hurt anything if i don't change it for a little bit?...its a 99 ford ranger 6cl 2wd.My truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
it should be ok for a little while but check the fluid level you might just be lowMy truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
it could be the pump, or you could have bad balljoints or bushings in you front end. like the first answer said, check the fluid level first, if it continues, check for power steering fluid in your driveway. if so, the pump's bad. if the pump doesn't leak and it keeps squeeking, try spraying wd40 on the steering bushings/balljoints. if the screeching stops, it was them, and they need replaced immediately, for safety reasons. My truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
Is your power steering unit leaking, check to see if there is any fluid in the reservoir, if no fluid is found add, start motor and turn steering from the left to the right several times till noise quits, if unit is bad, I would replace it as soon as possible. My truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
Turn off your engine and check the power fluid level and wiggle the power steering belt. The noise could be either a loose belt or low fluid. My truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
yes it is the pump check the fluid levelMy truck is making a screeching noise when i turn?
check your aux belts..may just need tightening or replacing...

    How hard is it?

to change the power steering pump in my 88 s-10. there is a massive leak. were else could the problem be?How hard is it?
One of the hoses may have cracked/split/burst, the sector shaft seal may be leaking (it's the one in the bottom of the steering gearbox). That's about all there is in a power steering system. Make sure the pump is the problem. On most vehicles, the pump isn't hard to remove, it's the pully that is a bear to change. A special tool is usually required. Parts house may rent them. How hard is it?
Pump or lines to it could be leaking. If you can change a water pump you can change this, but first you must locate the leak. How hard is it?
    Hoses -

Check all the hoses - wash off the engine bay, run it and have a friend turn the wheel slow so you can see where it is leaking from.

Hoses are a lot easier to swap out.

But if it is the pump it should not be that bad of a task. How hard is it?
not to hard...get the shop manual from advance or other ....best 15 dollars u can spend........that being said most leaks are bad hoses...very high pressure....[ i did have a PS pump reservoir crack in my 1984 s 10]How hard is it?
Not sure how hard it would be, but you can check all your lines. If you have a section of rubber tubing then your best bet is to replace it and put two hose clamps on each end if it is a return line. If it's a high pressure line you probably have to buy a line that is fitted for it.How hard is it?
It's not that difficult, assuming you have some automotive, or mechanical aptitude! If you've never worked on the truck before, go get a Chilton's, (thats what the main book was called when I did my own work), or other repair manual and follow directions! How hard is it?
could be pump, lines or gear box.

    Power steering issues?

99 Taurus with power steering issues. It sounds like the pump is going bad, but its only 2 years old, it has all the fluid. Hard to turn, tires wearing fast, noises when turning that sound like they are comeing from the pump.

How do I know if I should just change the pump or one of the many other things that could be doing this?Power steering issues?
did you check the air in the tires.also it might be the rack too. did you bleed the air out of the lines once you put the pump on?

  • What is the most u would pay for this car?

okay so i have a 98 eclipse gs... i am gona post info about it and i want u guys to tell me wat is the most u would pay for this car.. lol please help

ok so its a 98 eclipse gs 4cyliner 2.0 liter.. but the engine has a hole in it and spits out all da oil so the car is not drivable unless engine is swapped. recently to this car i had changed to transmission along with clutch and flywheel which cost 1300. changed the brakes and rotors 200 bucks, changed power steering pump along with a tensioner pulley and cam shaft pulley. i have a 3 inch exhaust on it. a 100 dollar air intake new batter, its fully loaded, leather moonroof, everything power but the driver window wont open(off track had it done but fell again) the car rann greatt but then the engine suddenly got a hole in it and it sucks.. lol it would work perfect with a new engine.. also it has a body kit but the front is broken and needs replacement and back bumper needs allignment.. so if u were gona buy how much would u pay? thanksWhat is the most u would pay for this car?
First I realy don't think the GS had a 2.0ltr. Only the GS-T and the GSX. The other models had a slightly bigger chrysler motor in it. At least that is what I thought. Second. you will not get much for it so I would register on a Eclipse forum and part out the car. People need lots of little things you have there and I think you will make more a little at a time. What is the most u would pay for this car?
Pull it to the nearest metal recycler...they'll pay you more than I would charge you to tow it off your lot. What is the most u would pay for this car?

Well in the area I live on a car like that is considered a junk, or parts car. Local scrappers give $50 for something like that.

How do i change the drive belts on a nissan 300zx?

i have my mechanic do that and i pay him with the money get from selling thingsHow do i change the drive belts on a nissan 300zx?
It a simple job. All the pulleys are on swivel or pivot bolts. You loosen them and your belts will gain enough slack to take them off. Go to www.twinturbo.net or www.300zxclub. com...These sites are dedicated z folks. They have tons of forums and faq sections. They even a illustrations on how to do a lot of jobs. I have a 91 TT, and I usually go there to get my answers or tech help. How do i change the drive belts on a nissan 300zx?
You'll need a socket wrench with some sockets. American cars use inch system, Euros use metrics. Unsure on Japanese. Anyhow, on the pump, start loosening the mounting bolts until you hit one where you can move the pump. Move it in, and there'll be a lot less tension on the belt.

It's pretty easy, i would save the pain in the azz stuff for the mechanics, this one is do-able.

How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?

I was expecting to find a single serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner pulley. I have changed serpentine belts on many models with no problem. But this Sienna has two belts, not one. One belt drives the power steering pump. The second belt drives the alternator and A/C. I don't see a tensioner pulley on either belt. Do these belts work like old-fashioned V-belts belts where you tension them by loosening something (like the alternator) and then using a pry bar to tighten the belt? I can barely see the power steering pump so it looks pretty tight, I welcome advice from anybody who knows this model. Thanks. How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?
loosen the 14mm bolt on top of alternator. loosen 12mm bolt below alternator sitting sideways. adjust belt tension with 10mm bolt running through previous 12mm.

loosen 12mm bolt on top of power steering pump. underneath vehicle loosen a 12mm bolt below p/s pump pull on belt to relieve tension, and pry carefully to increase tension.

a bit of advice when reinstalling belts, the belt tension has to be just so, too tight and you will wreck the bearings in both pump and alt., too loose and the belts will squeal they have to be just right.

1989 Honda Prelude 2.0 SI Power Steering Help?

We've got a new power streering pump on the way for a 89 prelude si and I wanted to change out the power steering reservoir while I was at it. Does anybody know how universal these reservoirs are? There's one on ebay for a 1990 Honda/Acura (wasn't prelude specific) and I wasn't sure if that would work. I know they offered the 4 wheel steering in these years as well, which mine is not. Does that make a difference? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How do I/Can I change the power steering belt in my Cabrio?

I have a '97 VW Cabrio that screams like I'm killing its children everytime I turn (although it seems like it's only when I try to turn when I'm going uphill...). The guy I bought the car from says it's the power steering belt. Other people (not professionals) who hear it tell me power steering fluid, but the one person that looked under the hood admitted that the fluid was full. I doubt its the pump (cause I don't feel like paying that much to replace it). Is it the belt? Maybe the fluid needs flushing? If it is the belt, can I change the belt myself or do I have to have it professionally replaced? How do I/Can I change the power steering belt in my Cabrio?

What causes power steering pump to go bad?

Does it fail like any other part, or can the driver increase the liklihood of it failing?

My mom's backyard mechanic/boyfriend got a hold to my keys and claimed he was seeing if my transmission was going bad (which im sure it is bcuz my car changes gears weirdly) and he came back bragging about how he was doing 90 mph going around a curve...so therefore the transmission cant be going bad. {Idiot I know} So anyway the next day I drive my car a few miles and bam no power steering! You may be paranoid but what made you think that.

Anyhow check your psf level with the engine off.

we have had the rack and pinion check some say it is ok and others say it needs to be changed. How do I know if the whining when we turn the steering wheel is not from the power steering pump? We have taken it to about five different mechanics. what can i do to make sure we dont replace something that does not need repair? My dodge caravan has a problem with the power steering?
if you have already replaced the pump and it still does this then you know its bad,one true way to test it is cut the wheels all the way and see if it has a tight spot in it when you turn the wheels, also when your driving it you,ll notice a slight pulling from it or when you go in to a turn it wont come back strait by its self, that's good way to find out, you,ll probably have to replace the pump to rule it out, good luck.EDIT you can try flushing it out but adding anything to it isn't really going to fix the problem,it may prolong it but not repair it,get another opinion from another shop and see what they say about it,good luck.My dodge caravan has a problem with the power steering?
If you have a leak and the fluid keeps running low you maybe getting air in the system, causing the whine noise. I would have the R%26amp;P flushed, but I would use the Mopar teering fluid, nothing else, also if you have a 2000 or older van, if its still avalible pick up some anti-foam agent for the transmission at the dodge dealer, It will look like a real small bottle that has clear looking fluid in it, That helps break up the air bubbles in the system. but get the leak fixed firstMy dodge caravan has a problem with the power steering?

Rough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?

Does anyone know how much it costs to replace a power steering pump in my 99 or 98 Cadillac STS. cant remember which year. Im pretty positive the pumps out, because the wheel is very difficult to steer with. I noticed today that it started making the low fluid whining sound when turning. Really I want to know rough labor costs. A mechanic told me roughly 1,000. I find that to be rediculous because the parts add up to about 100. I just dont know how much work goes into changing it on a Cadillac. anyone with experience please help. Im not sure if it would require an engine lift or anything like that. That would be awesome if I could just do it in my garage with regular tools, but I doubt it.

thanks a lot in advanced everyone,

JoshRough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?
Have you tried looking under the car for leaks. Sometimes it is a simple thing like to tighten a clamp on a hose from the pump to the rack %26amp; pinion. What I would do is fill the pump with oil jack up the front of the car start the motor turn your steering wheel left to right lock to lock 4 or 5 times then have a look under the car to see if you can see the oil leak there has to be a leak somewhere. Have a go you have nothing to loose.Rough cost of replacing power steering pump STS 99?
It sounds more like the steering rack is the problem. That will cost around $1000 dollars and up.

Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?

Here's the situation. My husband and I don't know anything about cars and he hasn't put any power steering fluid in his car for a while and it started getting difficult to turn. So I put some fluid in there and there was no change. The next day I put more in the resevoir and then let the car run for a while and then drove it. When i looked where the car was parked there was a small puddle of power steering fluid on the ground, but i didn't spill any. So i assumed their was a leak. I got power steering fluid with leak protection. Anyway I drove it again today after putting more fluid in and it is leaking in a different place, still leaking power steering fluid. So my question is what is the usual cost for the replacement of the pump (if that is the problem) because i don't want to get ripped off because i'm naive. Also is that what you guys think is wrong, or just a like a broken seal, or leaking hose or something? Thank you.Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?
ill bet it isnt the pump. i dont recall ever seeing a ford pump go bad and leak fluid. its usually the rack and pinion cylinder, and there around 500.00 to replace, material and labor. i'd check for a used one in yellow pages, auto parts, used- buy that one, then call service places for a price on labor. most here in colorado (dealers) all charge over 100.00 per hour labor, and that job is prolly 1 1/2 to 2 hours labor.....hope its just a hose ..good luck.Approximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?
Could be just a hose because they can crack after a while. It shouldn't cost a lot to fix it. Do not let them say %26quot;oh you need a new power steering pump and it's gonna cost $1000%26quot; If that's the case, take it somewhere else, don't even negotiate because they are trying to rip you off. Replace the swollen hose

As the hose swells from heat and use, it naturally swells, this will create a leak around where it connects to the pump, thus leaking. Try a clampApproximately how much will it cost to replace the power steering pump in my 97 ford taurus?

Removing a Power steering pump 93 dodge grand caravan.?

I have a 93 dodge grand caravan. I have replaced the pulley, serpentine belt and now I found the real problem of my (eaten belts). It is my power steering pump. The wheel on it is hollowed out on the inside. the wheel on it appears to be made of a soft metal. So I purchased just the wheel to put on to it. *They told me I would only need the wheel at Autozone*.

I need a diagram or some detailed instructions of how to remove the psp and how to change the wheel. I'm sure it will need to be pressed on. I have never done this and can't really afford any mechanics in this area. Even the unlicensed mechanics charge an arm and a leg :(Removing a Power steering pump 93 dodge grand caravan.?
This is not a job for an amateur. I have been a certified Chrysler mechanic for 25 years and it is by far the most difficult pump to install. after it is off about three hours and with quite a few bad words you still have to r%26amp;r the pulley. the problem is not taking it off it is getting it out of the car. like putting a bowling ball in a pool pocket. it is just too big. If you still want to try it go the the dealer and buy a factory service manual. it is more expensive but it will give you step by step instructions. haynes and chilton consumer manauls are a waste of money.Removing a Power steering pump 93 dodge grand caravan.?
Go to autozone, murrays, advance, napa and get a Chilton's repair manual for a 93 Dodge van.....they might not have it in stock but can get it in a day or two.....Chilton's repair manuals covers everything from soup to nuts on any model.....they have very nice diagrams showing how to do most maintenance....check it out.

Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?

$230! Granted, this was for a synthetic oil change. However, the oil change place hit me (again) with auto transmission fluid and power steering fluid change rec. So, I went for it. This is for a 2005 Chrysler T%26amp;C (caravan). I have about 77,000 miles and haven't done these changes since I bought it new in '05.

In general, is this kind of stuff necessary on this kind of vehicle? Also, how hard would it be to do it myself? They said they had some sort of pump for the power steering, etc. I don't have that, but I do have a pretty good toolset, jack, etc. I've got another car (2000 SAAB 9-3) that has about 60,000 on it. So, I also want to know what I need to do on it at this time beyond the usual repairs and oil changes. It has a manual transmission. Thanks for any help!Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
That is a chunk all at once but they should be done. The price does not seem out of line for what they did. As for doing it yourself, the trans fluid is hard to do since you should flush the cooling lines and the torque converter as well. That is why they use an in-line fluid exchange while the car is running.

The Saab should also have the fluids changed but the manual can be done by you since it won't have cooling lines to mess with. I'd wait untill I needed a clutch and do it when the trans is out.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
all you need is a bucket to catch the oil manual transmissions no advantage in changing the oil.. power stearing change oil what a rip off.. synthentick oil is not needed.. if you change the oil every 3 thousand and the filter.. use a straight viscosity 30 in the winter 40 and 50 in the summer.. all you need is a 5/8 wrench to open the oil drain.. the used oil place in a five gallon can.. the places that change oil will take it and put in their tank no charge.. buy penns oil or valvoline ok .Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
tranny fluid is recommended every 30,000 p/s flush recommended every 15,000. trans isnt hard just drop the plug drain the oil and put plug in and refill p/s needs a pump to pump out fluid and refill. foreign vehicles normally call for maintenance services every 30,000 miles call dealer for a service menu. do not flush if you havent done it from the start could damage trannyDid I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Referring to the owner's manual for recommended maintenance intervals is the only way to know for sure if they told you to change the fluids before they actually needed to be changed. As far as I know, however, most modern automatic transmissions don't require a fluid change that soon (and they don't require the P/S fluid to be changed that soon either...)

You can change your own oil at home using a set of ramps, an oil collection pan, a crescent wrench (for the oil plug) and a filter-wrench for the oil filter in less than 30 minutes. As long as you have somewhere to dispose of the oil (like Autozone or a local recycling center), it's easy. Changing other fluids can be more difficult - often times it's easy to drain the fluids (like in a transmission), but hard to re-fill them.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Okay as a mechanic, I say every 30000 miles you need to get your tansmission serviced. but thats only on an automatic. the power steering flush i dont understand unless the fluid was burnt up. The amount is not that bad because of the amount of work and the prices of synthetic oil. But these are all things you can do. you do have to be very careful when you do a trans. service though. oil change is no problem. but if you hve the right guy looking at it when you go in he can inform you of a major problem you might have in the future.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Sounds like they they took you for a ride in you own car and you don't remember. You should be able to get a service manual from your local library to help you. doing the oil changes is not too hard once you have done it it will be easier next time

As for a pump a large syringe with a plastic tube attached will do. Nearly all the cheep tools you can get from your cheaper auto shops

I have a 1985 Oldsmobile 98 3.8L V6 and the belt that seems to run the power steering and the water pump is very loose and worn out. It is inside the belt that runs the Alternator etc. I know with the alternator loosening the one bolt allows it to move down to remove the belt and up to tighten it back up so I can do that to get to the power steering belt but how do you take the power steering belt on and off? I will choose however gives me the best answer. How do I change the power steering belt on a 1985 Oldsmobile 98 3.8L V6?
This should be the setup you have, if it uses V-belts, as opposed to a Serpentine multi-groove belt.

    http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/l

Loosen the 3 bolts/nuts that have asterisks next to them. Note that one nut is in the back. When you tighten belt, be careful prying against the pump, as the reservoir case bends easily, and you could make it leak. Best to pry against the top/front area. Also, there are 2 bolts to loosen on the Alternator. One that goes through the slot, and another that serves as a pivot point. Easier to move if you loosen both. If it already was loose enough that you didn't have to loosen the pivot bolt, make sure you tighten it when you're done. How do I change the power steering belt on a 1985 Oldsmobile 98 3.8L V6?

Power steering cost and reasons for failure?

3 weeks ago my steering goes on my 2005 chevy silverado with 36k miles. I take it in to the shop they charge 380 after tax to fix the power steering pump. I asked them what could cause this to happen with such low miles they said either wear or defective unit. then 3 weeks later same thing happens. I take it back they say its the power steering gearbox now. that cost me 630 dollars after tax. I cant afford to get this steering fixed once a month. How do I know the gearbox was the source of all this crap. They missed the gearbox being shot the first time around how do i know its not something simple that is putting pressure on the gearbox and pump? SHould be no reason for failure at 36k miles. Fluid level has aways been checked. I have got to say comparing my business with other industries my Business blows any other business away as far as service and guarantees goes. I give the customer a price to fix a problem and if i dont i go back no charge. As far as paying the mechanic to change the power steering pump i think it was a half *** job. I went there to get the steering fixed not to have him replace a broken part there is a difference. He missed the gearbox the first time even after asking him what could cuase the pump to break.

so 1.did they charge a fair price? 1100 total for gearbox and pump.

    2. why wouldnt thye have seen relized the gearbox was shot the first time.

3 what could cuase all that crap to break in the first place and should they have known or checked in other areas. I would think they would seeing how unuasual the repair is.

Normally after i get my car fixed i am worry free. I walked at worried this crap is going to blow up on me lose my steering becuase they missed something lose control of my truck and kill someone becuase of there incompitencePower steering cost and reasons for failure?
with that low miles, shouldn't it be covered under the factory warranty? Its not going to blow up and you lose your steering, Do you have aftermarket wheels, such as 20 inch rims or bigger? they will cause the power steering and parts to wear prematurely and go out. 1100 sounds about right for both parts fixed with labor and parts.

Changing power steering pressure hose on 97 monte carlo.?

Changing power steering pressure hose on 97 monte carlo.?

i have a very very diffacult model monte carlo. three of my spark plugs are at the back of my engine, my alternater is at the bottom of the engine, under the power steering pump, so if i had a leak in the pump my alternater would be ****** (wich is just what happened) well acually the leak is in the hose witch brings me to my qeustion. how the heck do i change my pressure hose the runs behind the middle of the engine. i have tried taking the dog bone off the front and the engine just wont roll forward. there has got to be something else holding it on.

so can you tell me how to roll it forward.

or another way to go about it.Changing power steering pressure hose on 97 monte carlo.?
To change the power steering hose you will have to put the car in the air, and loosen the sub-frame to gain access to the connections on the steering rack. If you take the two rear bolts loose, and support the sub-frame, you should be able to gain access to the rack.

This is one of those jobs that you really need a lift to do properly.

When you have the sub frame down, replace both the pressure and return hoses.Changing power steering pressure hose on 97 monte carlo.?

  • How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?

So yesterday I start pulling out of my driveway in my '89 LeSabre (Vin C 3800 motor, pump has 220k miles) when I noticed my power steering feeling wonky and the pump making a terrible noise. I check the fluid and it was foamy, yellow, and super low. I must have a small leak and the empty space must have gotten filled with condensation (was raining all day) and then mixed with the remaining fluid. I sucked out the old fluid and poured in some fresh fluid and off to school I went.

So... I check it again today and its super low... again.... at least its not foaming this time. However, the pump has developed a squeak so its time for a new one. I'm actually going to salvage the pump and lines off an '89 Bonnie parts car but I can't get at for a couple days.

    So my questions:

    1. Can I drive my car with the bad pump for a couple hundred miles and be ok? I commute a pretty good distance to school but I should be able to swap out the pump in about a week. I'll keep the fluid topped off in the mean time and the squeaking isn't terrible right now.

    2. How exactly is the pumped changed out? 2x 13mm bolts to the motor and then a couple 10mm fittings to the rack, then pull the lines and pump out as an assembly?

Thanks for any input folks :)How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
Yes you can still drive the car with a squeaking power steering pump. Can't really tell you how long the pump will last but even if it goes out completely it is still drivable just really hard to turn. If you want to get a little more time out of the pump fill it up with transmission fluid. It is thicker than steering fluid so it will not leak as fast and will still work Just fine. and to change the pump as long as the pulleys are the same you just unhook the lines unbolt the pump and replace. If the pulley is different you will need to get them both pressed off and the new one pressed on to the pump. most parts stores should have the tool for this to rent. How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
The one thing you have neglected to mention is %26quot;where the leak is%26quot;...THAT is what needs to be repaired before you even consider how long you can drive with a squeaky pump. Allowing the pump to run low everyday is just asking for a more catastrophic failure that would likely cost more money...How long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
If you keep it topped off you will be ok. I had one go dry and finally after 3000 miles it went out. I think it lasted so long is because a small bit stayed in the pump to lubricate it.

good luck on 2 question. It really shouldn't be too difficult. It might be easier to remove the lines 1st. If you have access to tubing wrenches will help the chance of rounding off corners of the fittingsHow long can a squeaking power steering pump be left alone?
power steering is only to make slow speed turning easier and is not a major requirement but you could need a new rack and pinion/steering box depending on type of steering and where the leak is....the bad noise is proberbly because of the pump working on low fluid

  • About the power steering pump on a 1990 Ford F150....?

I am wondering why, now that power steering pump on my truck has been changed, the pulley will no longer stay on. When my dad originally changed the pump he did not have the proper tool to press it back on, so he hammered it on. Ever since it was hammered it on the pulley will no longer stay on. We have tried another new pump but the pulley is the same. Anyone have any Ideas on how I can keep the pulley on. Will a locking nut or something keep it on?About the power steering pump on a 1990 Ford F150....?
The only thimg I can think of, is to weld it in place, or use some JB WELD ORIGINAL, not the QUICK type. If you use the JB WELD, you need to let it cure for 24 hours, before you put the belt back on. Good luck.About the power steering pump on a 1990 Ford F150....?
The pulley is definitely damaged. Could it be fixed? Most likely... yes, by a machinist. However, the odds are that it would cost you less just to get a new or used one that's in serviceable shape and install it the right way... rather than hammer it on which will damage it too. They are pressed on and pulled off by using specific tools, as you most likely already know. Whatever you do, make sure it's done right when you get another one.

As you found out, a new pump won't solve your problem. Pumps come WITHOUT the pulley on purpose. Why? Because various engines in various vehicles use different pulleys. They all may use the same pump however... but the pulley sizes or even the number of slots they have for belts may be different. So there you have it. You keep your pulley because it obviously works with your rig.

If you know a machinist that can hook you up, they should be able to dial in the pulley on a lathe or milling machine and overbore the shaft hole. They can then machine and press in a repair sleeve and re-bore it to factory specs. That repair if done right will last a lifetime. As I said though... paying a machinist to do what is required to fix your pulley will most likely cost more than another pulley.

As for installing a locking nut, there shouldn't be any threads on the pump's shaft so that's not an option. If there happens to be... I'll be in shock... but see if the threads are reversed against the direction that the pulley turns. If they are, the nut will self tighten as the pump turns. It may work.

Using anything as cheesy as JB Weld is simply stupid... they might as well have told you to try to superglue the pulley on. Neither will last for long... fix it right the first time. Welding is also out. Do that and you cannot use the pump for a core when you get another one. Bottom line? Get another pulley be it new or used. Best wishes!

I know it may be hard... and sometimes it may even seem to be impossible... but the best things in life come when you're free of those chains. Life itself only continues when you're free of them. You do need some new fluid. Use a bulb type baster and suck out as much as possible. Then refill with fresh stuff. Run it for a week or so, then repeat. That should do it.

sounds like you have air in the system, when you stop the car shut off the engine and see if you have foam in the reservoir, if you do check the return line it may have a pinch clamp, if it does replace it with a worm type clamp, do not over tighten or it may crack the plastic nipple, refill and test drive

How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?

I own a 98 Ford Taurus (V6 3.0 single cam) I had my power steering pump changed recently by my gf's father, because the old one was leaking. The car is working but the steering seems to have a little bit more resistance than it should (very mild) and also has a very slight whine that kicks in once in a while. I know that is the indication of a leak but it only happens once in a while. I also checked the fluid and it is brownish and murky, not the way the fluid looked when I added it. I talk to my gf's dad and he said that the power steering pump needs to be bled, but doesn't know how to do it. He said it may just need to be used a while more to get the air pushed out of it. He also said to start the car and crank the wheel back and forth for a bit once in a while. he said that will help prime it. Should I do this? Is the fluid normal? Should the power steering pump be bled? if so, how do I do it? If anyone can answer anything, it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
The air will work ts way out. Just keep a check on your fluid Laval and it will be fine. How do I bleed my power steering pump on my 98 Ford Taurus?
    Yep, No bleeding is necessary.

When you wake up tomorrow it will be fine.

All that pumping has churned the fluid into fine micro bubbles.

It will take a while till they dissipate.

There is no bleeding. The cap has a breather hole that will allow any trapped air in the system to escape as the pump is working.

If you have 60,000 miles or more on the car, why not just pay the dealer to do the timing belt? The drive belts have to come off to get to the timing belt, so you just pay for the belts and get them put on for free while the timing belt job gets done.

It's best to keep your hands off your car unless you have a bit of mechanical know how. You should be able to look at the belts and see what needs to be loosened up without looking at pictures, It's pretty basic.

You can follow the instructions of the other posters, and it should work. You can also turn the wheel to the limits on both ends. Bump the wheel back and forth against the limits until the whine stops. You HAVE to do this while the car is running. It is the only way to properly bleed the rack.

EG8 1.5 Single Cam 92Model Civic ...bought foreign used power steering pump %26amp; changing it myself.....I need to know the steps to drain all the fluid out the lines %26amp; pump so i can put CLEAN ORIGINAL HONDA Power Steering Fluid.....How to drain Power Steering Pump...?
I recommend removing the fluid from the reservoir if you can, then disconnect the return line and put it into another container while plugging the return port on the reservoir. This will take all of the fluid from the system and return it to the jug and keep it from cycling back into your system. Then keep the reservoir topped off with the fluid you want to put into the system. Start the car and turn the steering wheel all of the way to one side, but not enough to make it squeal. Hold the wheel this way with a bungee. It's best to have someone help with this because the reservoir CANNOT RUN DRY! It will destroy the pump. Keep the car running and topping off the reservoir with new fluid until the fluid that runs out of the return line into the disposal jug is clean and has no air in it. After this, turn the car off, connect the return line back onto the power steering reservoir and turn the steering wheel to the opposite side. Let the car sit this way for about 5 to 10 minutes. Start it up, move the wheel from lock to lock and then bungee it on the other side, turn the car off and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes again. This will open up the valves in the rack and allow any air to float up and out of the system. You may have to do this several times, but it will bleed it and then you will have replaced the fluid in the system as well as flushed it. Hope this helps. I have done it many times.

i did this to a 84 olds 3.4L, 1st. get the car up on jack stands, you will need your floor jack and a piece of wood to support the motor , 2nd. move the floor jack and wood under the oil pan , just a little pressure, 3rd. there or 2 large bolts on either side next to the frame, they open the back of the motor like a clam, take them out. now slowly let the pressure off the jack and the clam will open 2%26quot; to 3%26quot; don't let it go down too far, or you may break steel water lines, now there is more room for you to remove the end on the rack, this is still a tuff job, working the old out and the new in, take your time and use a friend to work the other end, do everything in reverse to install the new line, fill the Reseve, and check again later on and the next day, good luck!

99 Taurus - Changed power steering pump. Growling with not much assist.?

I just bought this car power steering was wonky and leaking so I figured the pump had likely got dry a few times and screwed the pump.

By wonky I mean that the steering seemed to have good assist at times and not good at others. It was kind of come and go.

I put a new pump on and now I am getting very little power assist most of the time. When I am parked in my alley and I turn the wheels back and forth it seems to almost fully assist but the pump is growling most of the way.Fluid level is good. Not sure how long it may take to bleed the system. I turned the wheel fully side to side several times on 3 different occasions. I also took it for a drive and it seemed there was some assist but may have only seemed that way cause the car was moving. Now that I read this it is pretty much the same as before.

I am now assuming it is the steering gear. Not to excited about changing that. Looks like hell. Possibly a clogged line or power steering fluid filter?

Any help, suggestions are greatly appreciated,

yea maybe a line or filter.. check with your local auto parts store to find out if you have a filter but then again you may have just replaced it with another bad pump... whether new or used a pump can be bad... i would try replacing the pump again first.. seeing as how u should have a warranty on it anyway.. that would save you some cash if this is the problem.... if this still does not resolve the issue and you checked the lines and filters (if applicable) then try the steering gear.. but it doesn't sound like it would be the issue... also flush all the lines with clean fluid.. but man it really just sounds like another bad pump.. sorry... good luck man!

Does anyone know how hard is to change the power steering on a 95' Ford Contour?

It's a Duratec V6 2.5L engine and i notice the power steering pump is like under the engine somewhere. I have no lift machine or none of that crap. Does anyone know how hard it is to get that pump changed? Hoses might have to be changed also. I have hardly any mechanical experience. What do yall recommend?Does anyone know how hard is to change the power steering on a 95%26039; Ford Contour?
It is not that difficult if you know what you are doing. If you have natural mechanical ability just go buy a chiltons repair manual for the contour/mystique. If you have no experience and no ability take it somewhere and you are looking at about 500 bucks parts and labor

How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?

I have an auto stethoscope and when I listen to the power steering pump on my 2000 Nissan Frontier 4 cylinder truck, its just too loud for my taste. What can I do?(to save $).How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
If you are even the slightest bit handy, it is not a big deal to do. The most expensive thing to get is the pump. You can find it for a little over $100 at most auto parts stores. They will also change for a core, usually around $50, which you get back when you bring in your old pump off the truck. When you get the new pump, you can look at it to see exactly where the bolts that hold it on go. That will make it easier to uninstall the old one.

If you go here, there is a diagram of your pump:

    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG

In the links to the right on that page, there is also a section that will tell you how to %26quot;bleed%26quot; the air out of the lines after you install the new one. If you still have doubts you can buy a manual for your truck for $10-15. If you get the one made by Haynes, it is geared toward people with little experience, and has plenty of pictures.

Make sure you have basic tools, like a ratchet, extensions, sockets, maybe a swivel, and some open ended wrenches. That should do it...Good Luck! How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
a couple bolts,a couple hoses...relatively simpleHow difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
Well the damn things weren't designed to be quiet. If it's consistent, doesn't give out, then you could really save $ and just wait till it actually breaks. How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
If it was me, I would leave it be if it's still working and wait until it goes. You can actually drive without power steering, it's just harder, so you'd be able to get it wherever you needed to even if it went, but that's just me. Changing the pump is doable for someone who isn't a mechanic, but it's not exactly the easiest do it yourself job either. It would require a good amount of time and effort, and the part itself isn't cheap for most cars. How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
As long as it's fairly accessible then the average Joe with a Haynes or Clymer manual could change it.How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
Well, I like my mechanics WITHOUT seasoning, gives it more of an earthy flavor. But if you're going to go that route, I recommend garlic to compliment the natural texture of the mechanic. My grandmother also used to sprinkle just a pinch of brown cinnamon on top.How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
It's a piece of cake...Just follow the rules of the book!

Or it might end up crazy! Follow the instructions in the vid below! How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
It's not hard as long as you have some basic metric tools and some pacients. I would consider investing in a repair manual they are only about 20 bucks and can be very helpful to someone that is new to mechanics. How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
Loosen the belt tensioner pulley; Disconnect the hoses/lines to the pump, then remove the pump attaching bolts. Reassemble with new pump in reverse order. How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
Problem is....the new one probably will sound just like the one that is in there now. You need a steth to hear and you want to change it? WFYB It's not hard to do. Good luck. How difficult is it for an average person, not a seasoned mechanic, to change out the power steering pump?
You must be old school. I say this because the radio/stereo is usually too loud for most to hear a power steering pump.

I assume the fluid is at the proper level. Did you have to add some at a point? The system could be cavitating and need the air bled out.

If you have to use a stethoscope to hear the noise loudly then don't do that again. If you are not experiencing power steering problems then maybe, to save money, you might just need to turn the radio/stereo up.
